This survey is closed. Thank you for your participation.

The winning design will be unveiled soon!

Share your thoughts on the five proposed designs for the National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan.

The Government of Canada is pleased to reveal the five concepts for the National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan. We invite you to take a moment to view them and complete a short survey before June 9 at Canada.ca/survey-monument-afghanistan .

The National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan will recognize the commitment and sacrifice of the more than 40 000 Canadians who served there, and the support provided to them by Canadians at home.

In January 2020, we held consultations with families, Veterans, current CAF members, stakeholders and all Canadians on design considerations for the Monument. Last August, we announced the five teams shortlisted to prepare design concepts.

We invite all Canadians—especially current and former CAF members and their families—to share their views. A jury of experts and stakeholders will consider the survey responses when selecting the winning design, which we plan to announce in the fall.

The National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan is part of our commitment to always remember. With your input, all Canadians can commemorate the fallen, and help pay tribute and honour the sacrifices of those who served in Afghanistan and their families.

For more information on the monument, please visit our web page National Monument to Canada's Mission in Afghanistan.

    Canada remembers.

We are renewing our communications and outreach strategy for Veterans, currently-serving members of the Canadians Armed Forces (CAF) and their families. With this renewal, VAC’s overall objective is to ensure Veterans understand the range of well-being benefits and services that are available to them, and how to access those supports.

As part of this communications and outreach renewal, VAC wished to consult with former CAF members and their families who do not currently receive support from the department. VAC wanted to learn why they are not approaching VAC for assistance, or conversely, why VAC is not reaching these Veterans and their families who may be in need of our benefits and services.

The consultation set out to explore the following factors:

    • Do former CAF members know about the programs VAC offers?
    • Do they need/want VAC support?
    • Do they feel there would be a benefit to coming to VAC for support?
    • How would they like VAC to communicate and reach out to them in their post-military lives?

Canada joined the United Nations-mandated mission in Afghanistan in October 2001 and continued to support the multinational military efforts there until March 2014. More than 40,000 Canadian women and men in uniform—as well as hundreds of civilians and government officials—served in Afghanistan. Many Canadians died as a result of their service in Afghanistan, including Canadian Armed Forces members, a diplomat, foreign aid workers, a government contractor and a journalist. Thousands of Canadian Armed Forces members were also injured—physically and psychologically—during the mission. Read more,
